  1. Along those lines, there's a great course on learning how to learn @ https://www.coursera.org/course/learning. There's a section which talks about the focus & diffuse mode. This is where you spend a certain amount of time working, and then take a few minutes to decompress (taking a stretch, walking around the block, bathroom break, etc.) before repeating the process. The "diffuse" time gives your brain time to step back from intense focus, discover patterns & connections in your thoughts & hopefully give you some great ideas.

  2. I’ve used a similar dot exercise at previous agency jobs trying to build consensus with clients. I’d direct a group of stakeholders to silently place color coded dots on a spectrum board of images for specific reasons according to the job. It’s amazing how much subtle maneuvering and manipulating, intentional and not, comes from conversation and chatter. Groups that typically thought they were aligned were almost always the complete opposite and relying completely on individual subjective context. Once aware, building consensus became everyone’s priority, and empathy spiked as well. It was always a great way to start a project.
